1.1.6.2
Time frame: Cody and Katia are Freshmen in high school.
Scene: Cody and Katia are studying at a table outside Big Buns.
Katia is staring at the patterns that the bricks make. Cody is
trying to get her to eat the cake his mom made for her and get some
help with his homework. It's evening.
An old man sat across
from them, continuously rubbing his own head.
Katia: I
wonder why the water on the glass doesn't condense evenly. Some of
the water droplets are bigger than the others.
Cody: Why don't you
wonder what that cake tastes like?
Katia: You would think that
there'd be no reason for it to not
condense evenly.
Cody: It's better than last week's. I promise.
Gabriel made sure she didn't forget the butter this time.
Katia:
My stomach hurts.
There's a big, burly man watching
them from a few table away. Katia asks if his family is going to
their vacation home in the Bahamas this summer. He says he'll miss
football tryouts. Katia shrugs and tells him he's too artsy to be on
the football team. He responds saying that he wasn't artsy and
certainly not too artsy to make the team last year.
Katia notices
the man watching them and suggests they do something else.
Cody
suggests that they go watch a movie and Katia says that the metro
will be closed by the time that they get done. He assures her it
will be fine and they head toward the movie. Along the way, they see
a Game Stop and Cody says that he wants to get Burning Crusade.
Katia says that WoW is a waste of time.
Cody: You know,
you think that when you start playing the game.... but then 10 hours
later you're like... 'I'm really hungry.'
"It's cramps, by
the way. I started my period."
"What?"
“That's
why my stomach hurts.”
“I don't need to know
that.”
"Nobody knows but me. It makes me feel
lonely."
"Tell Melissa."
"She'll make fun
of me."
"You don't think I'll make fun of you?"
"You'll
forget. Eventually."
"I'll certainly try.
Why don't you tell your aunt?"
“She's crazy.”
Purpose: To introduce Cody and Katia (their age, their general personalities and backgrounds, etc) as family friends who are very close to each other. Give the impression that the kids come from rich families. Give away that Cody's last name is Walkker.
Pacing: This shouldn't take anymore than 3 pages.
Scene: Brief summary of what they watched. Katia sits with the arm
rest down between them, shifted away from him in her seat, feet drawn
up onto the cushion.
Cody would remember for a long time that
he had nachos that day that were soggy on one side because water from
his soda had dripped onto them.
Right before the movie's
conclusion, one of the movie-goers gets up and leaves, completely
missing the end of the movie.
Purpose: Through body language, give a bit more insight into Cody and Katia's relationship.
Pacing: One or two paragraphs at the most.
Scene: When they get out of the theater and walk to the metro, it's
closed. Katia yells at Cody because she said this would happen and
he tells her to relax, they can easily walk home.
As they're
coming out of the square the metro entrance is housed in, a man turns
the corner and pistol whips Cody, knocking him to the ground. A car
is idling nearby. The man tells Katia to handcuff Cody and she
refuses, edging away from him, about to run for it. The man kicks
Cody in the jaw. He tells Katia, “fine. We don't need you
anyway. We can get along just fine with Walkker.” He then
kicks Cody in the gut and pistol whips him again. “You run
away, knowing that your friend's stuck here with me. But, I can't
make any promises what I'll do to him if you make a peep or turn tail
and run to the cops. You do as I say, and I just might find myself
in a more kindly and merciful mood. There's really no need for
either one of you to get terribly hurt 'less you put me in a bad
mood. You understand what I'm saying to you?” The man cocks
his gun and aims it at Cody's knee.
Katia handcuffs Cody as she's
told. The last thing she sees in this chapter is the man raising the
butt of the gun over her head.
Purpose: Kidnap Cody and Katia to be held for ransom.
Pacing: Two or three pages.
